Our short story competition had a summer theme this year, which seemed to inspire in you thoughts of long childhood holidays and family disputes. A surprising number of stories were written in the first person from the perspective of a child or teenager, including this year's winning story, Jellyfish by Anna Towers. The judges, Wells Tower and Tessa Hadley, were impressed by the story's language and imagery. "She doesn't underline and belabour her point," says Hadley, "it feels very precisely controlled, as if she knows exactly what she wants to do with this material. The language is beautifully fluid and marvellously visual."
If the labels in the jackets, trousers, sweaters and ankle boots of the fashion gang right now are anything to go by (and they usually are, frankly), the rise of female-friendly fashion might well owe something to two particularly chic French godmothers of the look: Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno. Vanessa Bruno has long been a destination store for smart visitors to Paris: her shop is full of clothes that are both thoughtful and sensual without being bossy or come-hitherish. Marant has been designing for half of her 42 years, and has in the last five become the insider's name to drop. Her particular brand of apparently effortless chic exudes a Left Bank insouciance that speaks to women in London and New York as much as in Paris. Of the 120 people who work for her, 100 are women. When interviewed in American Vogue earlier this year, she said, "I'm not a very dressy personâ?? I'm always thinking, Why buy new clothes?" Now, is it just me, or is that a rather marvellously ballsy thing to say to American Vogue?
Arabists of all levels will enjoy the convoluted translation of the ubiquitous and marvellously expressive word "ya'ani" (literally "it means") by a super-cautious Saudi interpreter during a fraught diplomatic exchange: "Having regard to all the circumstances and taking into account the probable ramifications of what you suggested we would prefer to reserve our position." McLoughlin points too to the problem of serious confusion over the word "if" in written Arabic â?? "idha maa" â?? which, infuriatingly, in ordinary spoken Arabic means "if not". It's surprising that misunderstanding between Arabic speakers and others isn't even greater than it is.
